Kosi Moon Bed and Breakfast - suggested excursions in and around the Kosi Bay Area

Whereas other establishments run excursions themselves, we choose instead to support our local community's entrepreneurs and encourage our guests to make use of these enterprising young people when decidng what to do when in Kosi Bay. It's one of our small contributions toward the upliftment of local communities and also our way of encouraging all who stay with us at Kosi Moon to maximise their enjoyment when visiting this portion of Africa.

A beach excursion to Kosi Mouth, or a day trip to one of our many other beaches, is an absolute must. THIS is what Kosi Bay is all about ~ the Utshwayelo (traditional fish-traps) ~ superb photographic opportunities ~  snorkelling in the estuary ~ strolling through the forest and along the beach while soaking up the sea air.

Boat trips on Kosi Lakes are another way to take in the natural splendour of Kosi Bay, either for fishing or a relaxing sightseeing cruise on the water.

Guided kayak outings on a river feeding into Amanzimnyama Lake are also a rewarding way to enjoy the outdoors. This is where Kosi Bay's precious Pel's Fishing Owls reside, and they can be heard, if not easily seen, in this part of the forest. These trips are dependant on availbility of staff and space on the canoes.

In season - November to February - loggerhead and leatherback turtles arrive to lay, and hatch, on our beaches. Turtle tours are a perfect way to view the age old nesting practice of these magnificent sea creatures. Seeing a mother turtle nesting, and then later in the season the hatchlings returning to the Ocean, is a life changing experience. These tours can only be booked a day in advance - please don't ask us to book early for you - this can be done when you arrive. Whilst every effort will be made by the experienced guides to 'find' at least one turtle for you to watch, please remember there is absolutely no guarantee that you will. The fee you pay covers the cost of getting you to the beach and back again, your permit allowing you to be in the Park, and the guides' remuneration ~ you're not within your 'rights' to complain about the cost if the turtles haven't come onto the beach that night! So be warned ~ if you're on a tight schedule and can't spend more than a night or two on your turtle quest ~ it's your gamble!

* Remember these outings are all weather and tide dependent *

For those who are keen to experience the essence of rural Maputaland there are a variety of cultural tours on offer ~ guided walks to the Mouth ~ hikes from Lake Nhlange (3rd Lake) passing Lakes Mpungwini (2nd Lake) and Makhawulani (1st Lake) to the estuary ~ a hands-on utshwayelo experience ~ a guided walk through the Raffia Palm Forest ~  a visit to the vibrant 'border-market' inside Moçambique (no need for passports here!) ~ and other tailor-made tours especially for the curious traveller.

We also highly recommend visiting Tembe Elephant Park, and Ndumo Game Reserve. Tembe Elephant Park is home to the Big Five, specifically some of the largest elephants in Africa, and large concentrations of nyala; while Ndumo purportedly has one of the highest bird counts in the country.

Trips to Ponta Do Ouro in Mozambique are lots of fun (remember to bring along your passports) and for the adventurous visitors, a stop at Fernando's for R 'n R's is a must!

These are just some of the fun, exciting activities guests can expect to enjoy.
